Sunday School Classes for Youth & Teens

Our Sunday School curricula explore five major themes: Unitarian Universalist Identity, World Religions, Social Justice, Judeo-Christian Heritage, and Spiritual Self Development.

2011-2012 Curriculum

Middle School: Grades 6-8

Compass Points leads participants on a year long spiritual journey:

To discover what they believe about life's big questions

To think independently, assume responsibility, make decision and explore values

To have a background in Unitarian Universalist history, polity and theology

To understand that religious liberty is a hard-won legacy

High School: Grades 9-12

Each year the curriculum for the High School class is chosen with input from class members and leaders.

Summer for Youth & Teenagers

Middle School and High School classes take a break in the summer, though many youth attend worship with their families or gather in the high school room with friends.

Special Programming for Youth & Teens

COYA Youthgroup - Community of Youth and Adults

COYA is our youth group for grades 7-12. Members plan and participate in social events, field trips, social justice and fundraising projects which build community and develop leadership skills. It is youth lead with the support and guidance of adult advisors. COYA meets at noon on the first Sunday of each month in the high school room.

Our Whole Lives (OWL) - 7th through 9th Grade Youth

2011-2012 School Year

OWL is a comprehensive sexuality and values education program offered on alternate years with Coming of Age. This program addresses the physical, emotional, spiritual and cultural aspects of sexuality with a strong emphasis on making healthy, responsible choices. Based on respect, inclusion, justice, and responsibility; OWL helps young people apply these values to their behavior and provides them with the information and skills they can use throughout life. This class requires an attendance commitment from youth and 2 parent orientation sessions. The next OWL program will be offered in the 2011-2012 school year.

Coming of Age for 8th and 9th Graders

Offered every other year, Coming of Age helps guide and empower young people as they make their transition from childhood through adolescence.

The program provides a youth- friendly community and structured activities that help participants make choices about the way in which they want to grow up. With the help of their mentors, participants actively develop their own understanding of Unitarian Universalism and who they want to become. Lead by an advisor team, Coming of Age includes the participation of parents, adult mentors, the Director of Religious Education and the Minister. The group presents their own worship service in the Spring and are welcomed to become full members of the church upon completion of the program.

The program is voluntary, with members making a commitment to attend all sessions. The group meets on Sunday evenings and some Saturdays throughout the school year. Enrollment is in September of 2010.

District Youth Conferences (Cons)

Many of our youth attend youth conferences organized by the Youth Adult Committee (YAC) of the Ohio Meadville District (OMD). Cons bring together Unitarian Universalist youth from a four state region for worship, workshops, social justice projects, and just plain fun. Con activities are organized and facilitated by youth with the support adult advisors. Info at http://www.ohiomeadville.org/yac/
